International communication infrastructures for data centers

1997 - 1999
Med-1 was founded in 1997, and became a pioneer in the field of international communication infrastructures in Israel. The company initiated and executed the installation of the LEV submarine telecommunications cable system, one of the five first private submarine telecommunications cables in the world. The cable was first made available for commercial use in 1999, enabling connectivity between Israel and the rest of the world at high levels of volume and quality.

2000
The success of the LEV project paved the way for the future, and brought the world of broadband to Israel. During the same period, a broader group was formed: the Med Group, which included, among others, Med Nautilus, which was under joint ownership with Telecom Italy, one of the largest telecommunication companies in the world.
The group completed another pioneering project with the installation of an intra-national optical network through its subsidiary, Med Net. The purpose of the system was to build a vertical and horizontal optical transmission line providing a solution for the needs of the communication providers and business companies requiring large, stable bandwidth.

The network's first stage included the submarine system IC-1 (Israel Coastline One) - two optical rings connecting Israel's coastal cities, from Nahariya in the north, through Haifa, Netanya, Herzliya, Tel Aviv and Rishon Letzion, to Ashkelon in the south. The IC-1 system was entered into operation in September 2000.

The network's second stage included the ground system - an optical network throughout the entire length and width of Israel, connecting the central cities, industrial areas and technological parks.

2001
In light of the success of the LEV project and an increase in the demand for bandwidth, the group initiated an ambitious, first-of-its-kind project - the Med Nautilus submarine cable system, a submarine fiber optic system in ring topology, integrated with a land-based fiber optic system. The system connects Israel with several European countries, and features an extraordinary level of resiliency and tremendous potential bandwidth (3.84 Tbps).
In parallel, Med-1 completed the installation of underground data centers in Tirat HaKarmel and Petach Tikva, in order to enable hosting of the group's endpoint equipment and network infrastructure, and to provide hosting and business continuity solutions for additional clients.

2005
As part of a transaction done with the company's shareholders, the company's international operations were separated from its remaining operations, such that that Med-1 IC-1 continued operating and marketing the intra-national network and data centers, while the ownership and operation of the international telecommunications transmission system was transferred to Med Nautilus Israel (a company fully owned by Telecom Italy).

2006
Following the changes in the local communications market, Med-1 decided to deepen its focus on its operations and specialization in the field of hosting and backup services using the data centers in its possession, and sold the intra-national network and communication operations of Med-1 IC-1 to Partner Ltd.
